about

Doctor Deathray
Born in Atlanta in the latter half of the 1900s, Doctor Deathray is a figure shrouded in mystery. She spent much of her adolescence learning the art of the blues while living under a false name, bouncing between the hills of rural Virginia and the dusty streets of various Atlanta suburbs before spending a decade studying her craft apprenticed to various musical legends in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and finally making a home in the hills and hollers of Southern Appalachia.

She has, to date, recorded several dozen sides of original music, traditional songs, and covers. Frequently accompanied by a backing band known as The Implements of Destruction.

Doctor Deathray was gracious enough to bless us with fresh recordings, original arrangements, and even a fresh composition for this celebration of the public domain.

Grainger moved to Harlem in the 1920’s and composed for, with, and accompanied artists such as Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Clara Smith, and Fats Waller.
