about

Originally Released 1914

Written by W. C. Handy in 1914, it is contentiously referred to as the first published blues song. Other contenders for the title of first published include “Memphis Blues” also by Handy in 1912 and “I Got the Blues” written by Anthony Maggio in 1908. Handy was born in Florence, Alabama where you can find a statue of him. He did most of his work in Memphis where they have a better statue of him.
