about

James P. Johnson
Born February 1, 1894
Died November 17, 1955

James P Johnson is known for a lot of things. The man is frequently cited along side Jelly Roll Morton as one of the pioneers that transformed Ragtime into Jazz. His 1923 composition “The Charleston” has often been called the Anthem of the roaring 20s.

I didn’t choose the Charleston for this compilation. It’s a fine song, and there are plenty of great recordings of it from 1923 but, by now, everyone has heard The Charleston. You’re more likely to have heard The Charleston than any other composition on this record.

And Johnson was so much more than The Charleston!

The majority of Johnson's recorded output of the 1920s was on Harlem’s Black Swan record label. Black Swan was the first record label in the US to be owned by (and one of the only record labels at the time to primarily feature recordings from) Black recording artists.

The Harlem Strut
Originally released in 1921 for Black Swan records

The Harlem Strut is one of the earliest recognized Jazz piano solo recordings. It would be two more years before Jellyroll would release one. These early Black Swan sides document the artform at it’s birth, and The Harlem Strut in particular swings in a way that it would take the rest of the Jazz world another few years to figure out.
